GPS City Announces Availability of Garmin Dakota Series

GPS City (GPS City.com) has officially begun taking the first pre-orders for the much-speculated Garmin Dakota 10 and Garmin Dakota 20 series.

The Garmin Dakota series was made official by Garmin Intl on Friday, June 26th, and the units will begin shipping in July to customers who place their pre-orders with GPS City. The Dakota series will combine many of the powerful tools of Garmin's eTrex series with the touch-screen technology of the newer Oregon line, albeit on a slightly smaller screen.

The Dakota 10 will feature a glove-friendly 2.6-in color touchscreen and weigh 6.75 ounces, and will last approximately 20 hours on a single set of batteries. No slouch in the memory department, the Dakota has 850 MB of internal memory that will store 50 routes, 2,000 geocaches, and 1000 waypoints. By upgrading to the Dakota 20, users will additionally find a 3-axis tilt-compensated compass, a barometric altimeter, wireless connectivity, and a microSD card slot.

With prices starting in the $200-range, the unit will find itself in competing with the best-selling Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx and 76CSx units, although many believe it is poised to take over for the aging-but-versatile eTrex lineup. 'It's exciting to see Garmin bringing the technology they've advanced so well in the Oregon to a new more affordable price point,' remarked Brenton Wingard, vice president of GPS City. Dan Bartel, vice president of global sales for Garmin agreed, adding, 'As families and friends explore the outdoors, Dakota helps keep their adventures affordable and enjoyable.'

Pre-orders are being accepted now at www.gpscity.com and www.gpscity.ca, and the units are expected to be released in July.

About Geocaching;
Geocaching is a GPS game played by GPS enthusiasts world wide. In most cases, a waterproof container is hidden somewhere in the world, containing lots of trinkets and traceable items. The co-ordinates of the cache are placed on the Geocaching website for other members in the area to access. A player (cacher) then goes to the official geocaching website and downloads/enters the GPS co-ordinates, and some helpful hints, for the placed cache. When a cacher finds an geocache they will log their find on the geocaching website. For official rules on geocaching and to get started visit http://www.geocaching.com .

One way to Reduce Backcountry Deaths

Unfortunatley too many people die doing what they love in the Backcountry of the world. Many adventures have unforeseen circumstances that put them at the mercy of mother nature and time. In a world of technology their are a few devices to help the user increase their odds of survival. I came across one good device at GPS City called the GlobalStar SPOT.
The Spot is a great device to ensure that if you get in trouble, someone will be notified and will respond to their needs. It uses the data channels of the Global Star Satellite network to send GPS position data back to emergency services, loved ones, or just to the users account to log their trip. The SPOT GPS Satellite beacon uses satellites to send data to the proper place allowing you to take it to most places of the world. Check out the coverage map below.

Features;
"Check-in" Button: Is used to send a position that lets contacts know the user is OK and the current location. This button is useful for marking waypoints while exploring. You can also use it to check in with a boss when working outside cell range.

"Help" Button: Sends a priority message to contacts letting them know you need minor assistance. Many users use this to let contacts know they are ready to be picked up.

"911" Button: This is the potentially life saving feature of the SPOT. (*Hint: Buy the insurance when you set up your GPS it is well worth it!) When you use this button the unit turns into an emergency beacon, transmitting your location information to local or international search and rescue services.

If you are going into the backcounty alone or in a group it is benifitial to carry a device such as the Globalstar SPOT Satellite messenger. It will increase the chance of survival in a bad situation if used properly.
